If Pacquiao loses to Margarito it could hurt boxing

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. still resting and contemplating his future after beating Shane Mosley earlier this year in May, Manny Pacquiao will be facing Antonio Margarito next month in a fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title and a chance for Pacquiao to win an 8th world title in as many divisions.

Pacquiao has been said to be struggling during his training camp and there’s been talk of it being Pacquiao’s worst one during his career. Right now, Pacquiao has become the cash cow of boxing and he’s the one that’s drawing the most interest of any other fighter and fights are doing well on pay per view.

However, if Pacquiao gets beaten by Margarito, it’s going to likely hurt boxing in a big way, because it will likely take away interest in Pacquiao. It would be nice if casual boxing fans changed their interest to Margarito, but that’s not likely to happen even if he beats Pacquiao.

The repercussions of a Pacquiao loss will be less interest in boxing, and according to an article at northjersey.com, HBO could lose “Tens of millions of dollars.” This shows big Pacquiao has become. He’s like the Babe Ruth of boxing. Ruth was the one that put baseball on the map in the 1920s, as he singlehandedly carried the sport.

Pacquiao is doing the same right now with Mayweather not showing interest in fighting, and there being few other stars that the boxing public cares about. A loss for Pacquiao to Margarito will likely make a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather all but impossible for the time being. Pacquiao would have to rebuild his image before he could get a fight with Mayweather, and by the time Pacquiao does that, Mayweather would likely be retired permanently.

This fight seems to be a must win for Margarito since winning the match is an uplifting part for his comeback career after being sanctioned not to fight for the sport for a year. The root of this punishment if you can still remember is his alleged cheating by putting a chemical substance that is when mixed with oxygen can form a Plastic of Paris (as hard as cement used on constructions).

Pacquiao battling illness: This could help Margarito

This is not a good news for Pacquiao! With only a month to go before their mini-mega fight at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, Manny Pacquiao has reportedly become ill with a virus that’s getting in the way of his training for his bout next month against Antonio Margarito on November 13th. Depending on how long this illness lingers, it could mess Pacquiao up much worse than you can imagine. His trainer Freddie Roach said in the past that having blood taken from Pacquiao for random blood tests would mess him up for three days.

Pacquiao vs Margarito - Well, getting ill could likely be a lot worse than that if this thing lingers, and you got to expect that Pacquiao won’t be at full strength for awhile if it really is a virus. The illness is affected his sinus, and that’s going to hurt Pacquiao’s breathing. Pacquiao has got a month to get his act together for Margarito. Hopefully, he’s not going to use the illness as an excuse if Margarito destroys him or if he struggles and looks bad against the Mexican fighter.

That’s the problem with getting sick while in training camp. Fighters often use that as an excuse to explain why they got whipped. Will Pacquiao do the same when/if Margarito whips him like a child? Pacquiao has been in with some fighters recently who were coming off of serious beat downs. Margarito is one of them, but I think he’s past the beating from Shane Mosley and is going to really like Pacquiao’s brawling style. It’s going to suit him a lot better than Mosley, who did a lot of clinching in their fight a year ago. If Pacquiao comes right at Margarito for this fight, it’s going to be like a lamb coming to a lion for a slaughter. And if Pacquiao has lost something from this illness, it’s going to be even easier for Margarito to beat the pulp out of him.

Arum was planning on matching Pacquiao vs. Valero

Top Rank promoter 78-year-old Bob Arum was planning on putting unbeaten Edwin Valero (27-0, 27 KO’s) against his number #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao for a big money fight within a couple of bouts. All of that will never happen now that Valero has committed suicide while in jail in Venezuela. We’ll never know what Valero could have done with his boxing career. In an article at Reuters, Arum said “I was grooming him [Valero] as a future opponent for Manny Pacquiao. That would have been a sensational fight.”

Arum was right about that. Valero was very special and could have been a great one had he lived. Valero was in jail for killing his wife on Sunday. And then today, Monday, Valero was found hanging in his jail cell. The jailers had taken his shoelaces and shirt as a suicide precaution, but had failed to take his trousers, which is what Valero used to hang himself on the bars of the cell. This is all pretty tragic and it’s something that hopefully people can learn from.

Valero reportedly had an alcohol problem before his death, and this would have had to have been treated for him to have taken on a top fighter like Pacquiao. But it’s interesting to speculate what would have happened if Valero and Pacquiao had met in the ring. Both Pacquiao and Valero would have been the same height at 5’6”, but unless Pacquiao came down in weight from 147, Valero would have been at a great disadvantage against Pacquiao.

At the time of his death, Valero hadn’t fought over 135. In fact, Valero only moved up in weight from super feather last year in April. To ask Valero to move up to welterweight for a fight against Pacquiao, which I could see happening given the pull that Pacquiao has, would have been asking too much from Valero. However, if the fight could have taken place at 140, Valero would have had an excellent chance at possibly beating Pacquiao. Both of these fighters would have gone toe-to-toe, and there’s no telling whether Pacquiao or Valero would have emerged as the winner. Valero had never been beaten and with his crushing power and unorthodox fighting style, he would have been a big problem for Pacquiao to deal with.

Arum wasn’t aware of how bad Valero’s problem was with alcohol at the time of Edwin’s death, saying “I had heard stories about drug and alcohol abuse, but I never realized the magnitude of it. The few times I met with hi, he seemed perfectly normal.”
